The White House has announced under Executive Order 14247, that the federal government will phase out most paper checks, as of September 30, 2025. This will include payments for Social Security Benefits as well as federal tax refunds, with few exceptions. Treasury will allow exemptions only by waiver, which can be requested by calling 1-800-967-5042.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) released an update stating that it will comply with the Executive Order beginning Sept. 30. Beneficiaries have two options: direct deposit into a checking or savings account, which can be managed through a my Social Security online account, or the Direct Express prepaid debit card, for those without a bank account.
Electronic payments provide faster access to funds, added security and greater convenience. If you are still receiving paper Social Security checks in the mail, we encourage you to switch to electronic payments before the September 30th deadline to avoid any disruptions. If you typically request tax refunds be sent to you by mail, we recommend that you prepare to provide banking information for your refund at tax time or start now working to obtain a waiver by calling the above number.
